If you stayed home because the weather did not look good this morning, You missed another good day of soaring and comraderie! I arrived at OWW wondering if anyone else would show as i drove through rain and wind. Mark Groves was patiently waiting and we started to set up around 8:45. About 9:15 Gilbert Perez and Bill Hoelcher showed up. The 4 of us were getting ready to start the first round about 9:55 when Dave Rice and Don Harris arrived. Now we had a contest! A few minutes later, Paul Wiese pulled in with a new Pike Perfect set up for ALES. OH Yea! Paul got to madian and trim the new plane then had electrical problems and had to drop out before the contest got started.

Don, Dave, and Bill would fly Radians, Mark his Radian Pro, Gilbert his Contest Red E Cumulus, and I would fly my new 2M Magic.

The Morning conditions were blue skies with high cirrus clouds, winds 2-4 mph initially out of the southeast swinging around to the southwest by the lunch break. We flew 10 min tasks with 10 meter landing tapes. 5 pts per meter.

Lift was light and variable with the wet bean fields sucking up much of the sun's energy. The first round was highlighted by Mark and his Radian Pro outlasting Don in very light lift conditions. Don's 50 pt landing made up most of the time difference. Bill and Greg had the best air of round 1 with Bill flying for an 8:42 a 40 point landing. Gil with his Big Cumulus stayed up longer than Dave with his Radian to finish up the 1st round. Lift conditions for round 2 improved with Don winning the first flight group with a 7:47. Bill got his max of 10:00 and a 50 point landing to win the second flight group. In round 3 Gilbert won the first flight group with a 7:04 and Bill continued to dominate the 2nd flight group with a 9:58 and 50 pt landing besting Don by 4:36 and Greg by 2:42. This dropped Greg to the first flight group and moved Gilbert up to fly with the leaders for the next round. All the pilots of the fisrt flight group in round 4 flew times between 6:42 and 5:22 with Dave getting a 40 pt landing and Greg setting the Magic down on the spot for 50 pts. Gilbert put the hurt on the leaders winning the 2nd flight group with 8:07 and a 40 pt landing Besting Bill by 2:15 and Don by 0:42.

Hotdogs were grilled to perfection by grillmaster Groves. High over cast moved through making the after noon conditions very challenging.

The 5th round started with Don having been bumped to the first flight group and Greg moving up to fly with the leaders. The first Group launched with Dave Rice winning the flight with a 4:43 and a 40 pt landing Mark flew a 4:27 and Don 4:25 with a 40 pt landing. Greg won the second flight with a 7:51 and 45 pt landing. Gilbert came in at 7:21 and Bill at 7:05 with a 50 point landing. With one round left, Bill had a good lead but was not assured of the win and 2nd and 3rd wood was anybodys to take. Flight group 1 launched with Don and Dave chasing a buzzard to the southwest and Mark headed to the west. Initially Mark was in good lift and was climbing better than the buzzard and the other 2 pilots. This eventually changed and by the time Mark made the move to join the gaggle they were up and away leaving Mark only sink. Don and Dave came in at 9:55 and 9:54 respectively with 45 pt landings each. No buzzards showed up for the second flight group and Gilbert out flew Greg and Bill with a 6:39 and a 40 pt landing. Bill finished at 6:20 and Greg at 5:43.

Conditions were challenging. Consistent soaring and landing, as always, were the key to victory. A good time was had by all.
