2014 ALES #1   Saturday April 26, 2013 - RESULTS

The morning dawned with left over rain from the day before still threatening the day's event.  After driving 30 min in the rain, a glimmer of hope was evident as the clouds lightened up a bit and blue showed though as I neared the flying field.

We had a good turnout of 13 pilots but missed some of the out of town flyers who had earlier expressed interest in coming.  Perhaps the forecast of high winds kept them away. Three flyers from the Dayton area did make the trip.

The forecast of high winds did turn out to be true with the winds peaking at 20-25 by round 2.  We got in one more round before we broke for lunch and after lunch the conditions improved slightly, still windy but not nearly as bad.  In the end we got in 6 rounds, starting the last round right about 3:00 PM

This was the first meet of the year and it was good to get out and fly airplanes. .The temperatures were warm so we all enjoyed that aspect of the weather after the hard winter we had.  To bad the winds were not as ideal, but I think that in the final analysis the conditions were very flyable and we all had a good time.

Gavin Tussel flew a clean contest not giving up much time and hitting many of his landings never once landing out of bounds.  One flight of note is when he chased air downwind and returned to catch the next ride about 4 times during the fight when everyone else was down.  Only the highly capable moldies were able to do this and combined with Gavin's flying skills the combination put him in first place.

Joe Mekina flew a stock Vista with a more powerful than stock power system.  He came in 2nd also never landing out.  Joe made many of his times and with the exception of one flight where he didn't find the air and Gavin put time on him, he pretty much won or nearly won every group he was in.  Joe's Vista motored upwind for the first 20 seconds than pulled up vertically to make the cutoff altitude of 200 meters in the last 10 sec of the allotted time or less.  From there Joe kept the model pointed into the wind with few turns.  He then hovered the model in the still wind onto the landing tape.  A couple of times the winds caught the model and he missed the landing tape, but many times he was able to score good landing points in the wind.

Don Harris also fell victim to the treacherous winds on landing on one flight when his model was literally tossed inverted when he was about 25 feet off the ground.  Don's quick response recovered the airplane but it was blown way off the landing tape so he did not get any landing points that round.

Paul Weise flew a moldie to 3rd place despite taking a zero from a landout in one of the early rounds.

The story of the day was therefore landouts, those that had them did not fair very well in the final standings.  One of the things that some of the constants were doing was it if became obvious that they were going to landout, way out they simply powered up and returned safely taking the same zero flight score but avoiding the walk and the dirt from last years farming on there model. This technique should not be overlooked when the crops come in, it will save trudging through the crops to retrieve a model.

Also many thanks to  Al Schmidt for keeping things moving along always announcing who is next in one way or another and launching the flight in a consistent way. Once again the all beef hot dogs were great thanks Greg Bell for binging them and the Grill Master -  Mark Groves for cooking them. .Having this kind of help I am sure contributed to the overall smooth running of the event and allowed us to get in the 6 rounds we did.
